Cat

Marcel wakes to loud music and discovers his cat sitting on a touch-sensitive smart speaker.

This isn’t even the first time this has happened. I get that Jony Ive seems to think his life’s mission is to remove every button on Earth, but ugh. Then again, I bet Jony Ive doesn’t have a pet. They’re not clean enough to keep in a featureless white box.

Anyway, I woke up angry because my neighbors were being loud again, then quickly realized that, for once, I was the loud neighbor. At least I can blame Sir Jony Ive, a billionaire. What’s my neighbors’ excuse for being absurdly loud day in and day out?

Marcel scans and edits comics while a cat stands beside the scanner.

I’m a bit proud of how streamlined my daily comic process has turned out: drawing, painting, scanning, editing, uploading, captioning, and posting. I even built myself an app that makes it easier to turn a multi-panel comic into a series of slides, one for each panel, so I can post them to Instagram. It’s still quite a lot of work, but I think I’ve made it as quick and easy as possible.

Gigabyte is, for whatever reason, fascinated by the scanning process. She always comes running when I turn on the scanner, then watches until I’m done.

Marcel lounges on the sofa with Gigabyte asleep across him while he says he needs to get up and clean the apartment.

Could I force her to get up, and would she probably not mind all that much? Perhaps.

Is it more respectful to spend 45 minutes whispering to her that I really need to get up and do something, while secretly being very happy that this means I don’t have to get up and clean? Yes. Yes, it is.

Marcel and Gigabyte watch a hornet repeatedly fly into the living-room window.

I think it’s important to show an interest in your children’s hobbies. Gigabyte has recently developed a fascination with large insects, and I cherish the quality time we spend together watching them.

Marcel tries to play with Gigabyte, who watches the ball instead of chasing it.

Gigabyte is so hard to play with. She's always interested in theory, but then she doesn't actually interact. It doesn't matter what game I try. Millimeter, meanwhile, is easy to entertain. I dangle something in front of her, and she has the time of her life. Giga just... watches...

Marcel raises his hands as Millimeter swats from a basket on a table.

I'm not sure if it's just a phase or if something happened, but she's very hard to read at the moment. One second, she's happily being brushed in her basket; the next, she swats at my hand because it's become too much for her. I don't know what's going on, especially because she still likes to be petted as much as ever. But she hasn't been properly brushed in about two weeks now, and I just hope she decides to let me do it again soon.

Marcel reacts as a cat swishes its tail on top of a dresser.

Right? I feel like there are rules but none of the cats care to elaborate. Not fair.

Marcel carries a stack of books while a cat sits in a basket on top of a bookshelf.

I’ll actually save money by switching to fiber. I just wasn’t interested in doing all the work (ordering it and making sure there’s access to the area where the thingy can be installed) to get it. Now’s the time.
