Marcel swims for exercise with Anna, then shops at a flea market and carries home a painting.

I’ve never really swum before. I know how to swim, breaststroke only, but I’ve always used that skill exclusively to not drown, never to actually work out.

Last year, I went to an outdoor pool with Anna and swam a couple of laps for the first time ever. But this was my first proper “Let’s go to the Olympic-sized pool and do this as a sport!” kind of swim.

Anna does this all the time, but I chose running as my go-to workout, so this was completely new to me. And exciting! And, somewhat surprisingly, a lot of fun!

Later, we went to a flea market and I found this painting for just €20. It hangs in my hallway now.

What a day!

Marcel goes for a run, works at a laptop, and celebrates as Anna books their vacation.

Will this be the year I buy myself a second or even third pair of workout clothes? Will it finally put an end to the constant juggling of my laundry schedule and workout plans? Stay tuned to find out!

I’m still practicing being a good traveler, and while actually being on vacation has gotten easier for me, booking one is still a nightmare. I’m in the very privileged position of being with someone who somehow enjoys planning trips, but a balanced relationship probably requires me to take the lead on that at some point.

But first I have to be anxious about this particular trip, because it’ll be our first vacation that requires a rental car, and I hate driving cars. Still, one must do what helps one grow, so I can’t just not do it because I’m afraid. I’ll persevere. Probably while gripping the steering wheel with both hands and staring straight ahead.

Marcel runs while listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl, then scans a stack of sketchbooks.

I love drawing in this journal, but I’d love even more for AI to handle the scanning and editing for me.

Marcel goes running in the rain, then watches Germany play Curaçao from a sofa.

I love winning battles against that inner voice telling me not to do hard things. It feels great.

Marcel runs in the forest, then relaxes on the sofa with Anna as they use their devices.

Sometimes quality time together means doing things separately, but side by side.

Marcel and Anna exercise before Marcel hosts a birthday gathering with friends, then he enjoys the day’s leftovers at home.

My journal entry from two years ago (just a classic text-based journal) ended with me promising myself I wouldn’t spend my birthday alone the following year. And I didn’t.

Last year, I invited my friends over on the evening of my birthday, and it was wonderful. Now many of them have babies, so this year I invited them over on Sunday afternoon for coffee and cake instead. It was great.

I went to bed blissful and full of gratitude.
