Rain

Marcel hesitates to go running in the rain, then embraces it and runs through puddles.

This is so incredibly counterintuitive, but I’ve never had a bad run in the rain. They’re the hardest runs to convince yourself to start, but they end up being the most life-affirming thing ever. It’s refreshing and even kind of fun.

I often think back to me four years ago: someone who was convinced they’d never run in their life, let alone find joy in it. There’s so much you can’t explain to someone who hasn’t invested the time in learning to love running. You can say all the right things, but you have to feel it to really understand it. By now, I’m kind of convinced that everyone who’s physically able can learn to enjoy running. It’s just so very human.

Marcel sits under an umbrella on a rainy park bench, reluctant to let summer end.

If this comic diary sticks around for more than a year, you’ll eventually notice that I become full of self-pity every time summer comes to an end. I find it hard to accept that we’re in for half a year of cold and wet weather. I hate being cold. I’m also not particularly fond of the accompanying darkness. Fortunately, we’ve learned from past winters and are currently planning to spend some time somewhere with better weather this time around.

Marcel watches the rain with Gigabyte, then goes for an evening walk among puddles.

I like this comic, even though I didn’t when I made it. It’s pure melancholy, and the whole day felt exactly like this.

On a related note, I always struggle with the end of summer and the beginning of the worst seasons. I will persevere, but it’s not going to be fun.

Marcel goes running in the rain, then watches Germany play Curaçao from a sofa.

I love winning battles against that inner voice telling me not to do hard things. It feels great.
